What to Look for in a Sustainable Bean Bag?

What Is a Sustainable Bean Bag?

As the name suggests, a sustainable bean bag is an Eco-friendly seating bag that significantly minimises environmental impact by using biodegradable, renewable and recycled materials both inside and out. Given the fact that they are mainly made from recyclable and renewable materials, this makes them a safer option for homes. But even though made from such materials, these bags for seating are super durable and long-lasting.

Things to Consider When Choosing Such a Bag

Outer Material

Upcycled Truck Canvas

This is maybe one of the greatest inventions manufacturers can make when it comes to designing such bags. Being made from such material means that such a sustainable bean bag is long-lasting, durable and comfy, ideal for daily use. Just imagine sitting on a piece of fabric that has travelled thousands of kilometres, resisting the tough weather conditions, and still going on strong?! Just amazing, right?! Investing in such a bag is a true blessing because it comes from manufacturers who have decided to give the fabric a second chance at life. A purpose that will keep them alive, no matter how old they are. Even though previously washed and treated in order to be repurposed, what makes these bags unique is the signs they carry caused by the weather, sun and the loads they've carried. The one thing you should be careful about when choosing such a bag is finding one whose cover can be removed for easier maintenance.

Organic Cotton

Another popular material for bean bags, which also happens to be good for the environment, is cotton. Cotton, especially the organic one, is a natural and eco-friendly material that is good for the environment. It's a soft, breathable, and durable fabric that’s great for being used by everyone, even by babies. Bean bags made from it are super comfy, durable and long-lasting without causing any discomfort or skin conditions, which is of great help for those with sensitive skin. When choosing a bag made from organic cotton, you're basically choosing one that doesn't contain any harmful chemicals, pesticides or dyes in it. An important thing to take into account, though (just like with the previous type), is to choose a bean bag that comes with a removable organic cotton cover. This allows for easier maintenance and care. Just keep in mind that some stains might be more difficult to remove from cotton than from an upcycled truck canvas.

Filling

When in the search for a sustainable bean bag, make sure to choose one that is made from renewable, recycled and biodegradable materials. Ideally, you should choose ones filled with shredded latex filling, a special bio-foam or some other natural products like wool or down.

Comfort

When in the search for the right bean bag, you shouldn't forget about the comfort, and this is closely related to the filling and outer material. Ideally, you should try the bag before buying it and see whether it meets your comfort requirements or not. In the end, you'll sit in it when watching a TV, reading a book or simply slouching in it after a hard work day, so choosing comfort over anything is a must.

Size

Choosing the right size of bean bag can also depend on the size of your room when you plan to put it, as well as on the bag's particular height. Both of these things are paramount in order to choose one that will best meet your needs and lifestyle.

Colour

The last but not least thing to take into account when searching for the right bean bag is the colour. Ideally, you should stick to darker or other colours that seem better at hiding stains. This goes mainly to those of you who have little children and pets.

How to Care for a Sustainable Bean Bag?

Regardless of the type of material you plan to choose, the one thing that stays the same for all of them is that taking care of them should be done carefully. Caring for them involves regular and gentle maintenance at the same time, which consists of washing their cover in a washing machine with a milder detergent on a cold or hand-wash cycle. Air drying by laying them flat is always a better idea than tumble drying in order to avoid shrinkage.

Spot cleaning is also recommended for increased hygiene and cleanliness. Ideally, you should follow the manufacturer's instructions to keep them in perfect condition. In those times when you need to just refresh the bag without washing the cover, you can sprinkle baking soda all over it and let it sit for at least an hour and then vacuum. This is enough for the baking soda to absorb odours, however, for better results and better odour absorption, it's best to leave it longer.
